Discovering India's Golden Triangle on a small group tour

If you have always wanted to see the history, charm and culture of India, but been a bit overwhelmed by the thought of the hustle and bustle and not speaking the language, then perhaps an escorted tour may be the best option for you. Travelsphere & Just You are sister companies offering escorted tours around the world, whether you are a solo traveller, a couple or a group of friends. Their company ethos is that your trip should be transformative, not only having a positive impact on you, but also on the communities visited. With over 60 years’ experience in escorted tours, their immersive itineraries are delivered by expert local guides who are with you from the very start of your trip to the departure gate on the way home, so you have the confidence to explore the road less travelled.

Sarah, from our Jarrolds branch in Norwich, travelled to India to find out what this beautiful land of contrasts has to offer. She confirms the excellent organisation of the trip, “The tour was organised beautifully. We were met at Heathrow Airport and were escorted through the holiday with a local guide who stayed with us right up to checking in for the return flight home.”

India is an assault on the senses in the best possible way, with historic palaces, exciting wildlife and bustling cities, it can be a land of colourful contrasts – by turns calming and chaotic, but always utterly charming.  Sarah’s itinerary was India’s 'Golden Triangle, an action-packed itinerary over 8 nights. This classic route of exploration centres around the cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur and includes Ranthambore National Park along the way “We did so much every day!” confirms Sarah, “People travelling to this part of India are looking for a cultural experience,” she continues, “I would recommend this trip for anyone wanting to broaden their horizons and learn about history, food and a completely different way of life.”

Hustle and bustle in Delhi

The trip begins with a tour of Old & New Delhi, then heads south to Agra to see the Fort and the breathtaking Taj Mahal.  This shimmering white-marble wonder was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his beloved wife and Sarah loved it, “For me the trip highlight was seeing the Taj Mahal - a magical experience.”

Ranthambore National is the next destination, covering almost 400 square kilometres, it was once the hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Here you can try and spot Bengal tigers as well as crocodiles, hyenas, leopards and more.

Onwards to Jaipur, painted pink by maharajas' decree, with its breathtaking architectural jewels such as the Palace of the Winds and the Amber Fort.

“As this was a tour holiday we stayed in 5 different hotels,” says Sarah, “… and all were of a good 4/5 star standard. Most of them had a pool, and all were very clean and well located.”

Hotels were all of a great standard

Sarah was utterly charmed by the locals, “I was overwhelmed by how gentle and caring the people of India were. They showed great respect for all animals and humans and were endlessly giving and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. Some of the sights in the streets of the large cities were very humbling, such as children begging, and shanty towns, but people still had a smile on their faces.”

Here are a few of Sarah’s top tips from her trip:

• Cover up in religious buildings such as temples and mosques.

• Avoid drinks with ice and salads washed in the local water.

• Take plenty of insect repellent.

• Be organised with your packing, you will be living out of your suitcase with limited time between hotels/tours so ensure you have everything organised and easily accessible.

• Be prepared for a very action-packed trip, with no downtime

• We ate local Indian food from breakfast right through to dinner every day - I particularly loved the Dahl. Those wanting a western diet may have struggled.

In summary, Sarah loves the diversity of this charming country, “India is a wonderfully colourful and vibrant country with diverse cultures and a multitude of landscapes and attractions. You can explore temples, mosques, see amazing wildlife on safari or just chill out at some of the beach resorts in the south of the country.”
